The beneficiary of the “LIFE capacity building in Hungary” project organised an information day on 10th May 2018.

New tendering opportunities, among them two international calls for tenders were introduced for those interested.

Our team was invited to the project opening workshop of OAKEYLIFE project where we had the opportunity to demonstrate our targets and the work we have done within the scope of KASZÓ-LIFE.

Presentations took place on 28th March 2018 where several Hungarian projects were introduced. On 29th March 2018 participants were given the opportunity to inspect project sites to observe the achieved results, the conservation and restoration works of natural habitat in forests, and an area seriously affected by invasive alien species. Finally, we visited a presentation house adapted for educational purposes.

The KEFAG Kiskunsági Forestry and Woodworking Company and the KASZÓ Forestry Stock Company established cooperation under the OAKEYLIFE project on 1st August 2017. After the representatives of KEFAG Zrt. visited KASZÓ Zrt. in 2017, and in 2018 we had the opportunity to take part in a workshop in the Peszér-forest.

The two public forestry companies could agree and work together in various subjects within the framework of the LIFE programme, since both of them undertook similar tasks in their winning projects like the conservation and restoration of natural habitat.

One of the main objectives of OAKEYLIFE project is to eliminate those local factors that jeopardise the achievement of NATURA 2000 management plans, such as inhibition of invasive alien species (tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), black cherry (Prunus serotina), Manitoba maple (Acer negundo)) and certain herbaceous plants like common milkweed (Asclepisa syriaca), canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) and tall goldenrod (Solidago gigantea)) in the Peszér-forest.

Another important objective is to expand the dimension of high priority natural habitat types in the Great Hungarian Plain through carrying out rehabilitation works as well as to insure and improve their state of conservation.

By highlighting the above mentioned objectives the project manager presented the achieved progress of OAKEYLIFE project to the tender office manager from KASZÓ AG. at multiple sites.

The meeting of professionals made it possible for both sides to exchange information and demonstrate their achievements.

During the late winter days, we successfully finished the collection of increment cores from the numbered sample trees as a part of the research tasks related to the monitoring of the improved groundwater management. By measurement of the annual tree ring widths on the cores taken with an increment borer, our aims are to prove the benefits of the LIFE Action on the growth and health condition of the common alder and pedunculate oak stands.

An important objective of the sampling design was to carry it out before the spring sap flow begin to alleviate this way the risk of any long lasting damages and infections to trees because of the drilled wounds on the stem. In addition to the proper timing, bored holes were treated with fungicidal sealer gel, usually used on garden trees after pruning.

Echo TV interviewed László Horváth about the project, which, together with previous reports, was broadcast in the Green World show.
